English Learning Area

English

At Mountainview High School, English provides students with opportunities to develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills that support success across all learning areas.

In Junior English, students engage in a wide range of learning experiences, including novel studies, film study, research tasks, creative and formal writing, and presentation work. These experiences are designed to build confidence and engagement while catering for a range of interests and abilities.

There is a strong focus on developing literacy skills so that students can succeed not only in English, but across all subjects throughout their schooling journey. Junior English provides the foundation for senior study, with many students choosing to continue English through to Year 13.

At senior levels, a strong English programme is offered, including a Foundational English pathway in Years 11 and 12 to support students working towards NCEA. English remains a valuable subject for all learners, including those focused on Science and Mathematics, as it develops communication, analysis, and critical thinking skills essential for future study and employment.

The school library also plays an important role in supporting literacy development, including opportunities for students to participate in a student librarian programme that fosters leadership, responsibility, and a love of reading.
