Science
At Mountainview High School, Science encourages students to explore, question, investigate, and understand the world around them.
In Years 9 and 10, students develop scientific thinking skills by learning how scientists investigate ideas, test evidence, and solve problems. Through practical learning and real-world contexts, students become critical thinkers who are able to make informed decisions about the environment, society, and the future.
Senior Science pathways in Years 11–13 allow students to specialise in a range of science disciplines, including Rural Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These courses provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts while developing practical, analytical, and investigative skills that prepare them for further study, training, and future careers.
Rural Science develops an understanding of the interconnectedness of the growing environment, including people, soils, water, climate, plants, and animals. Students explore sustainability, agriculture, and environmental systems that are highly relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand.
Biology focuses on the Living World — the study of living organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment. Students investigate ecosystems, genetics, evolution, human biology, and the diversity of life.
Chemistry explores the Material World, studying the composition and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes. Students learn about chemical reactions, elements, compounds, and how chemistry impacts everyday life.
Physics examines the Physical World and provides explanations for a wide range of physical phenomena, including light, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism, waves, forces, motion, and energy. Students develop problem-solving skills and an understanding of how physical laws shape the world around us.
Science at Mountainview High School aims to inspire curiosity, innovation, and a lifelong understanding of the natural world while equipping students with the skills needed for an ever-changing future.
